Studio update: new finishing suite

A calibrated reference room, remote grading, and what it changes for attended sessions.

A calibrated reference room, remote grading, and what it changes for attended sessions. The new space has been moved into! This room is being built to do two things at once: a color grading suite, and a reference capture bay. Not two rooms pretending to be one, one room, doing double duty, because the work itself increasingly asks for that. Grading and capture used to live on opposite ends of a pipeline, handed off between departments, between buildings, sometimes between companies. Here they can share a floor. This room is being set up for something closer to reference capture than traditional green screen: performance, movement, and likeness, recorded in a space where the real environment still means something. It may be temporary and we see it as an early stepping stone into our foray into virtual and hybrid production. Any constraints train us to be better problem solvers. It's a smaller footprint than a conventional setup would call for but the room isn't undersized for the work, it's sized for a particular kind of work, one where distance, light, and surface are all decisions rather than defaults.
